How long to stay at Desert Quiver Camp
Desert Quiver Camp is perfect for a two-night stay around Sossusvlei. It all depends on how long you want to explore the dunes. We felt that two nights were enough to hike the dunes at sunset and sunrise. Book here.
Desert Quiver Camp
This lodging location is definitely glamping, rather than camping. The rooms are spacious and have AC. Each cabin feels secluded and the star gazing here is fantastic. I heard some sort of wild animal (maybe a wild dog-like thing) at night too! My headlamp wasn’t strong enough but it felt very cool to have wild animals nearby.
The pool is gorgeous!
There are three different pricing options for the camp. You can do self-catering, bed & breakfast, or dinner, bed & breakfast. We brought our own granola for breakfast and expected to eat out for dinner. I don’t think breakfast is worth the cost because you should be getting up early to enter Sossusvlei. For two nights for two people we paid N$4,500 (around USD 240).
Our stay was easy and the staff were helpful. We checked in around 4pm, having spent the previous two nights at Barkhan Dune Retreat.
Where to eat around the camp
Desert Quiver Camp has self-catering cottages with a stove, fridge, and braai. You will need to pay a cash deposit of N$300 to get pots, pans, plates, and cutlery for your unit.
If you want to braai and haven’t brought any of your own food, the camp offers picnic baskets that get delivered to your cabin. There are meats, salads, breads, and spreads available. Be sure to book this before 4pm with reception.
Grocery shopping around Sossusvlei
You can visit the Sossus Oasis gas station for various items including cheese, canned beans and tuna, and several meats to braai. Although the station takes cards, if there is limited reception then you’ll have to pay by cash. The shop has an ATM.
Sossusvlei Lodge
Alternatively, you can get dinner at the nearby Sossusvlei Lodge. I really enjoyed the buffet meal for R300 per person. Besides an array of salads, pasta, veggie, and rice dishes, the main feature of the buffet is the grill station. There is a veggie station for stir-fried noodles, a fish station, and the meats! There is an array of game meat including Wildebeest, Eland, Oryx, and Blesbock.
I quickly became obsessed with the mixed game sausages. They were delicious!
Activites at Desert Quiver Camp
The main activity you should do is climb the dunes of Sossusvlei! You don’t need a guide to adventure. The road into Sossusvlei is well paved and you won’t need to do any off-roading unless you want to towards the Big Daddy Dune.
