Top Restaurants in Vilanculos
Most of the hotels and lodges have restaurants in them and so you don’t need to eat out unless you want to experiment. Additionally, you can visit another hotel just for their restaurant too! Typical breakfast food (omelets etc.) was hard to find at standalone restaurants but is available at hotel restaurants. These are the top restaurants in Vilanculos that we visited. Happy eating!
If there are just two places you have time for, make it Zita’s for the prawn curry and matapa dishes and this (unnamed) restaurant for the tiger prawns, views, and drinks.
Breakfast and lunch restaurants in Vilanculos
Kilimanjaro Cafe—One of the only restaurants in Vilanculos with a breakfast menu, we had quiche and an omelet for breakfast. There was a card machine, but it didn’t have a signal. Wilhelm had to run to the nearest ATM to get cash. Check out the books inside the restaurant. There is a nice home store in the same complex you can check out as well.
Casa Cabana—Also a hotel, Casa Cabana has a nice breakfast you can eat on the beach. There are some lounge chairs around and so you can plan to stick around until lunch, when you can order the prawn special.
Restaurants for lunch and dinner in Vilanculos
Zita’s Food— We loved the food at Zita’s so much that we ate here twice for dinner. Even if the place looks dead, just wander in and speak loudly at the hut on the ride side of the property. Someone will come out. We ordered food in advance and let them know what time we wanted to eat. We got the crab curry, Zita’s prawns, and fish curry with matapa with rice. You can also take cooking classes with Zita.
Unnamed Restaurant— I usually take a picture of the menu but I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the restaurant. I just have vibe and food pictures… It’s not on google maps, so you’ll have to trust me that it’s here. It opens at 11am. We had nice cocktails and amazing fish prawns here. The service was great but it took some time for our dishes to come out; it didn’t bother us since we weren’t hungry. I loved the view of the shipwreck and watching the tide come back in from here.
Casa Mika Cafe—I love restaurants where the menu is on a blackboard and changes based on what is available. Casa Mika is in a lovely garden space. We loved the food. This is the only restaurant that accepted a credit card while we were in Vilanculos; necessary since we didn’t have enough cash to cover drinks and food here.
Samara Lodge—recommended by the ‘gram community, you can dine on the beach at Samara Lodge. It’s right next to Casa Cabana so you can check both out.
Grab a beer
Tropical Bar—Walk along the beach and stop at the Tropical Bar. There are a lot of bars with the 2M logo and colors. It was too early in the day for a beer when we walked by, but it looks like a great spot. And you can’t go wrong with a 2M beer.
Restaurante Bar Sol Nascente—We didn’t have enough days to eat and drink everywhere we planned. Sol Nascente was on our list as a cool spot to grab a drink.
