A Short Visit to the Alpaca Loom in Paarl
One of the most unexpected things to do while vineyard hopping is to visit the Alpaca Loom in Paarl. My sister and I noticed the Alpaca Loom sign as we were driving to Fairview Winery (which has goats!) and decided to add it to our itinerary for the day.
I’m SO glad that we did. The Alpaca Loom has not only alpacas but also camels, goats, a coffee shop, and a weaving studio. It’s a great family-friendly activity for all ages—especially those who love alpacas (me!). Is anyone else out there paying good money for alpaca yoga…
Overall, we had a great time and spent around 30 minutes at the Alpaca Loom.
Visiting the Alpaca Loom
It’s best to combo a visit to the Alpaca Loom with a winery since it’s about 40 minutes outside of Cape Town.
The loom is open every day between 9:30am and 5:30pm.
Besides Fairview, you can visit the Spice Route Destination, Landskroon Wines, or go a little further to Babylonstoren. If visiting Babylonstoren, I suggest you visit the Alpaca Loom first because there is so much to do at Babylonstoren that you probably won’t make it to the alpacas! You can read up on everything to do at Babystoren.
The Alpaca Loom Petting Zoo
For a small fee (R20), you’ll be able to feed the goats and alpacas. You can’t feed the camel.
Some of the goats and alpacas are feisty! There was one brown alpaca who got really sassy when my sister started to feed another alpaca instead of him. He even spat on her a little bit!
Some of the alpacas are fenced in while others are roaming. The ones who were roaming seemed much calmer than the eager beaver alpaca fenced-in who wanted all the food.
The goats were also really funny to interact with as well.
You can also choose to go on a little guided tour with the staff to learn more about the alpacas.
The Cafe and Weaving Studio
My sister and I got a coffee with a view of alpacas and Table Mountain in the distance after looking at the items in the weaving studio. There are scarves and wraps made of alpaca wool in natural colors (think browns and greys).
