Forest Falls Trail Hiking Guide

The Forest Falls trail is an easy hike by the Mac Mac River. Hike to the top of Forest Falls and take a swim in the Forest Falls Waterfall pool!

Forest Fall Trail Basics:

  • 1.5 hours
  • 4km
  • Difficulty: Easy!
  • Loop hike
  • Cost per person: R30, cash only
  • Location: Green Heritage Picnic Site

Forest Falls Trail

The hike starts at the Green Heritage Picnic Site. You’ll pay as you enter.

There is no hiking map, as the loop to Forest Falls is fairly clear. Walk to the end of the picnic area and into the forest.

The hike to the falls

You’ll first hike along a dirt road (as you can also drive directly to Forest Falls). Then, you’ll take the path along the river. The path is shady and cool. Eventually, you’ll reach a pine forest area that you’ll hike through until you reach the next dirt road. Follow it until you reach the falls! It takes about 40 minutes of hiking along the river.

The falls

You can swim (or attempt to swim) in the Forest Falls pool. I wasn’t brave enough to go all the way in because the water was so icy!

If you face the falls, on the right-hand side there is a rope to swing + jump into the pools. You can also climb up to the top of Forest Falls on either side and wander around.

Forest Falls Hike

Head back!

When you’re ready to make moves, walk along the other side of the river, and eventually, you’ll reach the dirt road you first came across. This will lead you back to the dirt road and to the picnic site.

Forest Falls is a good hike to do along with visiting Mac Mac Falls and Mac Mac Pools. At Mac Mac Pools you can also do the Secretary Bird Trail.
