What to do in Mossel Bay

If you’re wondering what to do in Mossel Bay along the Garden Route, I got you covered. Spend as little as an hour at the coast or spend a couple of nights to go hiking.

Garden Route Itinerary Suggestion

After checking out from Gondwana Game Reserve, head to the Mossel Bay coastline for 2 hours max. Park on Point Street and walk to the St. Blaize Lighthouse and hike up to see the views after staring into the water to see the sea urchins. Then, continue on your way to Knysna.

Mossel Bay Coastline

When we first arrived at the Mossel Bay coastline, I saw people crouched over staring into the shallow water. I was sure they were just crazy. WRONG. There are so many tiny animals like sea urchins, crabs, and interesting mussels that soon enough I was also crouched over taking pictures of this colorful water world.

There is plenty of parking on Point street and by the shops around the Point Hotel.

Cape St Blaize Lighthouse

Hike up from the Point Hotel to the lighthouse for great views over the coast. The lighthouse was built in 1864 and was one of the only two lighthouses manned 24 hours daily on the South African Coastline. This is also the start of the St. Blaize Hiking Trail.

Mossel Bay Zipline

Adventure seekers can zipline across the Atlantic Ocean. This is definitely not for me. It’s been dubbed the “longest over-the-ocean zipline in the world.” According to the website, you can only book at the ticking office.

Hiking at Mossel Bay

Point of Human Origins

You need to hike with the official guide to get access to the Point of Human Origins. However, we didn’t realize this and just drove up to Pinnacle Point Golf Course. We thought we’d just be able to see a viewpoint but that isn’t the case. Plan in advance if you want to hike here. Book with the official guides.  There are three hiking options that range between 2 hours to 7 hours.

St. Blaize Hiking Trail

The St. Blaize Hiking Trail looks like an incredible feat along the coast. There are several entry points to the trail. Though, in full, it is a 13.5 km (6 hour) hike. The trail goes between Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse and Dana Bay. The trail is listed as moderate for length.

As this is an out-and-back trail, you may want to uber to the start of the trail and uber back to your lodging later. However, there is parking at either end of the trail.

p.s. the zipline is somewhere down there on the leftside over the ocean!

Nibs at Mossel Bay

Stars— We had coffee and lunch at Stars on our way to Hermanus from Storms River. The restaurant overlooks the coast and has a great selection of lunch and snack items. The fresh hake dish was amazing and I recommend that.

Vista Do Mar— We meant to visit Vista Do Mar instead of Stars but it was totally packed and food was going to take 2 hours to be served! This Portuguese restaurant looks great though. Just make a reservation beforehand.

Kaai 4 Braai— This place comes highly recommended and was on my food list for Mossel Bay.
