Glamping at B’sorah: 1 hour from Joburg
Located just an hour away from Johannesburg, the B’sorah luxury camping site is the perfect weekend getaway. With views over the Magaliesberg mountains and with the Hartbeespoort dam close by, you can relax with the sounds of birds and cows.
B’sorah just takes an hour to get to from Joburg, making it a great place to run away to on a Friday afternoon during lunch or right after work.
The Tents at B’sorah
There are two types of tents at B’sorah. We stayed in the Honeymoon Tent for R1800 per night. I loved the whole setup and the view over the mountains. This is the most secluded tent.
There is a real bathroom and shower (with hot water) too!
The braai area and kitchen spaces are outside. Salt, pepper, cooking utensils, and dishware are included. Bring your own spices, oil, food, and wood/coal.
Additionally, there are 4 luxury tents for R1600 per night.
If you forget anything, check out the small shop near the reception with coal, fire starters, chips, and cool drinks.
Check out B’sorah’s website here to book.
Hiking at B’sorah
The property has 1600 hectares of wilderness and cattle grounds. The trails range from 2 to 18 kilometers in length. The trails are wonderful because they continuously intersect. So, you can choose to turn back or continue your hike at almost any point.
On Saturdays, the trails are only open to overnight guests. On the Saturday we hiked in December, we didn’t run into anyone on the trails. The next day we saw at least ten cars lined up in the parking lot and several people starting out their hike.
The trails are easy to follow and well-marked. Follow the small, white footprints and track the checkpoints on the map. You’ll be given a map when you check in with reception, and it’s also available here.
With the exception of the 18km hike, the trails do not have any serious inclines and it’s easy to keep a good pace. As such, the trails are easy-moderate in difficulty.
There are also biking trails!
15km Trail
Wilhelm and I did the 15km trail, leaving our tent around 8am and returning around 1pm. We probably stopped for about 40 minutes for lunch.
One of the main attractions while staying at B’sorah is swimming in the river. Unfortunately, Johannesburg and the surrounding areas have had torrential downpours in the past weeks and the river was very muddy the weekend we hiked. Instead, we used the area as a picnic spot!
Day visits are available Sunday-Friday:
- Adults (12+) – R70
- Pensioners – R50
- 2 – 12 years – R30
What to do around B’sorah
Dam Good Cafe
We visited Dam Good Cafe for breakfast. The spot is quaint and has unique views over the Harties Dam. Each table is located in a secluded spot. We had the breakfast special, which comes with a pot of coffee or tea, juice, toastie with egg and sausage, and a cookie. We subbed the sausages for an extra egg.
Van Gaalen Cheese Farm
Van Gaalen Cheese Farm is home to great cheeses, a plant nursery, and hiking and biking trails. There is also a restaurant on site overlooking a lake and lush greenery.
Van Gaalen has some fun animals to check out, like goats, pigs, ostrich, turkeys, and the blue crane. The blue crane is South Africa’s national bird and I only found out thanks to the visit!
Maggie’s Farm
Visit on your drive back to Joburg. Maggie’s Farm has an art gallery, books shop, and antique shop. the restaurant overlooks a small pond with ducks and other birds.
The breakfast and lunch menu looks delicious. Any restaurant that has sweet corn fritters for breakfast is special in my books. I definitely wanna come back here for that soon.
