A Portuguese Breakfast at Pastelaria Princesa

If you’re looking to head out for breakfast in a different part of town, try out Pastelaria Princesa in Kensington. Okay, maybe Kensington isn’t new to you—but it was for us! Wilhelm (who always finds the best places for us to eat) had found Pastelaria Princesa and we went there on Saturday morning for breakfast as a potential wedding venue was nearby.

The vibe at Pastelaria Princesa is legit and we immediately heard people speaking Portuguese.

I liked the balcony and the interior tile design.

Parking was a little tough on the main street. Instead, we looped around and parked on the side street right by Pastelaria Princesa.

Breakfast at Pastelaria Princesa

We started off with filter coffee (which comes with a free refill!) and a croissant. This isn’t your typical French croissant. Pastelaria Princesa’s croissant was more like a sweet bread—complete with some sort of sugar glaze. We ate it dipped in coffee, but it’s not exactly what I would consider a croissant.

I got salmon toast (Portuguese roll) with cottage cheese and scrambled eggs. I really liked the cottage cheese addition for breakfast as it’s not something I would normally have. Wilhelm got a 3-egg omelet filled with onions, tomatoes, and cheese. Both dishes were super good and very filling. Although we ate breakfast around 10:30am, we weren’t hungry until almost 4pm!

The service was fast and our waitress brought our coffee refills in no time. There is a disclaimer on the menu that the food is prepared fresh and so you may have to wait a bit; our food came in about 20 minutes.

The peri-peri sauce was so spicy but so good—add it onto your eggs and… *chef’s kiss*

We spent around R300 on our meal.

The Deli

Be sure to check out the Portuguese deli and goods shops at Pastelaria Princesa. They even import their own Portuguese water! There are bakery items and meat, as well as canned goods and staples, like oil and peri-peri sauces.

The menu is on Google Map. Check it out here.

Nice review, for me the best items at Princesa are a prego (in my top 3 in the city) or else a sandwich on fresh Portuguese bread for savory and Portuguese pastries for sweet (pastries de nata, bolo do arroz, pao de deus) all drunk with a Briza (Madeirian sparking juice). Lastly recommend getting their pap bread to try at home and their chorizo and kale to make caldo verde from the deli. 😊
