Jollyboys Backpackers: Where to Stay in Livingstone

Boasting a friendly atmosphere, comfortable accommodations, and an array of exciting activities, Jollyboys is the perfect base to explore Livingstone’s wonders. The hostel is great for friends, families, solo travelers, and couples. We spent two nights at this popular hostel and would recommend it to all.

Accommodation options

Jollyboys offers a range of accommodation options to suit every traveler’s needs. Besides the typical dorm style associated with hostels, Jollyboys also has single and double rooms with private bathrooms. We opted for this and paid USD 160 total for two people for 2 nights. Sorry peeps, I have no clue how this happened but I didn’t take a single picture of the room. However, it was exactly as pictured on the website.  You can also stay at their campground.

We didn’t experience any noise or issues during our stay. Our room was located away from the common space, plus it didn’t seem like the hostel was full when we visited.

Book online here.

There is a communal kitchen where you can make your own meals or you can eat at the restaurant on site. We had an omelet for breakfast and burgers for dinner! There is a card machine but we were asked to pay in cash.

The Jollyboys Vibe

One of the highlights of Jollyboys Backpackers is its lively social scene. The communal areas are buzzing with energy, offering opportunities to mingle, share travel stories, and make new friends.

The poolside is perfect for lounging, sunbathing, or simply enjoying a good book while soaking up the sun. (Another sad moment for me, I forgot to take picture…)

Perks of Staying at Jollyboys

  • On Thursdays, you can get a free veggie dinner if you notify the kitchen in advance.
  • The staff is knowledgeable and able to book several tours and activities for you.
  • You can get a free pick-up from the airport and also use the free daily shuttle to Victoria Falls.

The only downside to staying at Jollyboys was that the wifi connection was poor in my experience. It took forever to receive and send emails, even using a basic server. I opted instead to buy a roaming data package from MTN (my provider in South Africa). However, I did notice other guests on video calls so maybe it was just my luck. The wifi is only available in the common areas.

I loved the murals at the entrance of the hostel

What to do around Livingstone

  • Get breakfast or lunch at Kubu Cafe, a cute cafe + farmstall + shop just 5 minutes from Jollyboys.

  • Visit the Livingstone Museum for a history of ancient finds up to modern days.
  • Check out the Livingstone City Market for any self-catering needs, and get your fill of mopane worms! For some reason, it’s called the “Zimbabwe Market” on Google Maps but the location is correct.
