Blue Lagoon, Cape Greco Peninsula

The Blue Lagoon on the Cape Greco Peninsula is a must-see when visiting Cyprus. It has crystal blue water and looks otherworldly. It’s hard to capture how beautiful the Blue Lagoon is in pictures.

There are several viewing and swimming areas for the Blue Lagoon in Cape Greco. Additionally, a stop at the sea caves on your way back to town is a must.

You can visit the Blue Lagoon either as a day trip from Larnaca or as a morning activity from the beach towns around Ayia Napa. We spent 3 hours between the Blue Lagoon viewpoints and the sea caves.

When I visited in June 2022, there were no crowds and lots of available parking. Two cruise ships stopped at the lagoon while my sister and I were in the water but they were further from the shore than we were.

Getting to the Blue Lagoon in Cape Greco

Drive— We rented a car and it was easy to navigate. There were very few other cars on the Cape with us in June 2022. Parking is free and available both in dirt lots and along the side of the road some areas.

ATV— It’s popular to rent an ATV in Ayia Napa to drive around to the beaches and the cape.

Bike— There are several bike rentals available in Ayia Napa and the beach towns of Protaras and Pernera. It will be about a 10km bike ride from the cities to the Cape. The roads are safe for bikers.

Walk/Hike—Several people were walking from the main road. There is a nature trail that goes from Konnos, around the Cape. Check it out here. There are some sections that will have you walking along roads. It’s identified as the “E4 European Long Distance Path, Ayia Napa, Cyprus” on Google Maps.

Cruise— There are several cruises that start at the harbor in Ayia Napa that will take you on a ride to the Blue Lagoon. You’ll have the chance to jump into the water from the boat. Most cruises cost around €20. Check out this cruise option which we saw as we were leaving the lagoon, or this cruise which is the boat in the picture behind us below. If you’re into themed cruises, you’ll like this Black Pearl Pirate Cruise.

Jeep— If you dont want to drive yourself, check out the popular Jeep safaris that leave from Ayia Napa and Protaras.

The Blue Lagoon Viewpoints

There are three major viewing points for the Blue Lagoon on the eastern tip of the island (the Greek part…) and two are accessible for swimming.

The first viewpoint is located by the “Food Cart” on Google Maps. Here you can head into the crystal blue water, by following the trail. We stopped a little before the food cart, here, at the crossing of the nature trail.

The second viewpoint is across the road from the first viewpoint and is called the Blue Holes. Just follow the footpath to the edge of the cliffside to see the wilding sea. There is no swimming here, just a sheer drop into the water below.

The third viewpoint is at the end of the road on the peninsula. Literally, you cannot go any further. Sitara and I decided to get into the water here. Although it was a little chilly at first, we had to get in for a ‘gram pic and ended up spending time swimming around.

There is an ice cream stand with cool drinks available.

Tips for the Blue Lagoon in Cape Greco

The water is so crystal clear and though Cyprus isn’t known for its snorkeling, many people around us had their goggles to see underwater. Bring some goggles with you to catch the underwater sights.

Beware of the sea urchins as you enter the water as they like the shallow areas around the cape’s cliffside.

Sea Caves

After exploring the Blue Lagoon, make a stop at the Sea Caves. The caves have been formed by the erosion of rocks from waves crashing on the cliffs over the centuries.

One of the caves is accessible to walk through, though you may have to wait your turn.

According to local legend, the caves were used by pirates and smugglers of the Mediterranean to hide their treasures and store prohibited goods.

There is an ice cream stand around for those who are craving something cold in the summer.
