Things to do in Freiburg
Freiburg im Breisgau, located in southwestern Germany, is a charming city known for its picturesque beauty and rich history. It is nestled in the heart of the Black Forest region and is famous for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the iconic Freiburg Minster, a stunning Gothic cathedral. There are plenty of things to do in Freiburg, whether you’re here for a day or more.
Wilhelm’s grandmother lives just outside of Freiburg and we usually spend a day exploring the city whenever we visit her. As such, I’ve collected my favorite things to do in Freiburg so you can explore as we do!

A bit about Freiburg
Freiburg, Germany, is a beautiful city with a rich history. It was founded in 1120 as a free market town, and its strategic location on trade routes between the Mediterranean and North Seas helped it to grow and prosper. The city is also home to a number of important universities, including the University of Freiburg, which was founded in 1457.
During the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), Freiburg was heavily damaged, but it was rebuilt in the following centuries. Today, the city is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its charming medieval old town, its lively student population, and its proximity to the Black Forest.
Things to do in Freiburg
What I love about Freiburg is that the city is not too overwhelming. There are plenty of shops, activities, and historical sites but also lends itself to a chill day where you can spend a couple of hours without feeling rushed. I’ve visited Freiburg a couple of times because my husband’s grandmother lives just 30 minutes away by train.
The central station in Freiburg is easily accessible—the old town and plenty of hotels are nearby. I suggest doing this instead of driving in. Look out for day passes or deals when you get your train ticket at the machines—sometimes combo tickets are cheaper than buying a roundtrip ticket.
Seepark Freiburg
The Seepark (literally “lake park”) is an excellent way to have a calm summer day. It’s also one of the top free things to do in Freiburg. The lake area has a restaurant and ice cream around it. You can take a swim from the rocky beach area or walk around and find a section of large rocks to jump off from. The nearby university gives the lake area a hip, young vibe. The park is home to a variety of attractions, including a large lake, a Japanese garden, a children’s playground, a minigolf course, a restaurant, and a number of walking and biking trails.
The city tram stops near the Seepark so if you’re not up for a long walk from the Old Town, take the tram!
Europa Park
Although I haven’t been (yet?), Wilhelm and his brother used to visit this amusement park every year when they were kids. It looks like a blast! Euopra Park is the largest amusement park in Germany! Book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
Wander the Old Town
Be sure to visit the Münsterplatz, Freiburger Münster, Martin’s Gate, and Historical Merchants Hall. Day or night, these historical sights are beautiful. Also visit the Haus zum Walfisch and Schwabentor.
The old town is lovely and there are several shops you can wander in and out of. I don’t have any particular recommendations because I usually just browse when I’m here!
Freiburg Theater
Visit the Freiburg Theater and catch a performance!
Go on a Tour
One of the most unique tours in the city is with the unofficial drag queen of Freiburg, Betty BBQ. It’s time to put your Duolingo German to the test as the tour is only offered in German. The tour is popular with locals and tourists alike. During the tour, you’ll hear the latest gossip and get a history lesson.
If your German isn’t up to standard, then check out this popular walking tour. It’s actually pretty hard to find English guides so be sure to book ahead.
I also love free walking tours throughout Europe. Just do a Google search to find one that suits your schedule. Usually, tours are two hours long. There are several companies that offer this service.
Walk along the River
The Dreisam River has several paths that interconnect alongside of it. It’s a nice break from the hustle of the town.
Where to Eat in Freiburg
Plant-based buffet Adelhaus
Adelhaus is a welcome eatery in Freiburg with indoor and outdoor seating. The entire menu is vegetarian and delicious! It’s open every day except Sunday and Monday so plan your trip accordingly. You’ll fill up your plate with all you want and then pay by weight.
Harmonie Flammkuchenhaus
Flammkuchen is the German version of pizza. It’s basically flatbread with toppings. It’s light but filling enough for lunch! Harmonie has both indoor and outdoor seating and has a good selection of Flammkuchen.
Tibet Tea Garden
For a bit of tea, stop at the quirky Tibet Kailash Gartencafé. Go here for a kombucha and the vibe, rather than tea to be honest. The cafe is actually just part of the Tibet Center that offers daily meditation and yoga groups, lectures, and events on health and Buddhist traditions. It’s worth a stop on a calm day.
Bar with a view: Kastaniengarten
Kastaniengarten is the best bar with a view in Freiburg. This beer garden offers beer on tap and some basic snacks like pretzels. The bar is packed on sunny days; just be patient for a table with a view and keep your eyes open to grab one! The bar overlooks the church and city skyline.
Kastaniengarten is halfway up the hill. You can either walk there or cheat (as we always do) and take the elevator. The views at the bar are great. We always see families and kids here too.
After drinks, walk all the way up to the top of the hill. You may come across some musical performances.
